2024/25 Breeding and Whelping data
To provide transparency about what is happening on the breeding front for greyhounds in NSW the Commission publishes information it receives about breeding services (capturing both natural matings and artificial insemination) and litters whelped on a monthly basis. An overview of both year to date trend line data and more detailed monthly information is provided below. This information is based on data reported by participants and processed by the Commission in the relevant month.
The following graphs display trend line data that shows both monthly and year to date data in respect of services and whelpings.
Graph 1. Greyhound Breeding Services: number of services each month and the total number of services year to date for the current and prior financial years.
Graph 2. Greyhound Whelping Statistics: number of pups whelped each month and the total number of pups whelped year to date for the current and prior financial years.

2018/19 Breeding and Whelping outcomes
The Commission has reconciled the breeding services and whelping statistics received by participants for the 12 months from 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019. This process has revealed some discrepancies in relation to data for specific months. This has occurred due to a combination of late reporting by participants and delays in the processing of notifications received in the Commission and the failure to count these transactions in subsequent months.
Therefore the Commission has produced the following summary covering the period 1 July 2018 – 30 June 2019, to show the total number of services undertaken and litters reported to the Commission in respect of that period by 31 July 2019 based on the date of service for breeding services and the date of birth for whelpings. The Commission will produce this analysis, retrospectively on an annual basis, in addition to the month by month reporting that has occurred to date.
During the 2018/19 year there were 563 litters born in NSW, resulting in 3,747 pups. This number represents a decline of 6% on the immediate prior year, but an increase of 22% since the 2016/17 year, the lowest recorded number of pups due to the announcement of the greyhound racing ban in NSW. There were 352 individual breeders, and the top 3 breeding families accounted for 8% of the litters born.
The graph below shows the trend in the reported number of pups born in NSW since the 2011/12 financial year.
The graphs below show the month by month and cumulative figures for reported whelpings and reported services for the 2018-19 financial year. These graphs differ from previously reported monthly statistics following a reconciliation process which identified discrepancies in previously reported monthly figures. This has occurred due to a combination of late reporting by participants and delays in the processing of notifications received in the Commission and the failure to count these transactions in subsequent months.
