Rules and policies / New Local Racing Rules - 1 May 2023

On 1 May 2023, the Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission will introduce a number of new Local Racing Rules and updated definitions to support the integrity of racing.

New Local Rules

LR 21AIt is an offence to cause any undue harm or suffering to a greyhound.To clarify that the industry does not condone any mistreatment of greyhounds including, for example, striking a greyhound.
LR 34A

Owners do not need permission to house a greyhound with a registered Breeder or Stud Master for the purposes of breeding or whelping.

To improve efficiencies in the breeding process

LR 34B

A participant must present their greyhounds at a specific place when directed to do so by the Controlling Body.

To support compliance with GWIC's Rehoming Policy and the industry's eTracking program.

LR 55

A person must be registered as a Breeder to arrange for the service or AI insemination of a dam, or as a Breeder - Whelper to care for a whelping dam or litter of pups.

To ensure the person responsible for caring for the whelping dam and pups has the facilities and knowledge to do so.

LR 55A

A pregnant dam must be located at the premises of a Registered Breeder at least 14 days before the expected whelping date.

To ensure the pregnant dam has adequate time to nest and feel comfortable in her environment prior to whelping.

LR 64A

The owner or breeder of a greyhound must provide complete and accurate information in the course of registering a whelping or litter.

To safeguard the integrity of racing

LR 178D

Additional restrictions may be imposed upon a suspended person, such as not attending a racecourse or place where greyhounds are trained or kept.

As an alternative to imposing interim-disqualification and facilitate a participant's re-entry into the sport should disciplinary action not proceed.

LR 178F

Additional restrictions may be imposed upon a disqualified person, preventing them from betting on a greyhound race.

To protect the integrity of racing by preventing disqualified persons from engaging in race manipulation or conspiring with current participants to do so.

LR 182

If a participant is charged with criminal offences, the Controlling Body may suspend their registration pending the outcome of the charges.

To protect the reputation of the industry by preventing those facing serious, indictable offences from participating in the industry.
