Who is responsible for the Action Plan?The Action Plan is overseen by Greyhound Racing NSW and the Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission.
Why is an Action Plan needed?Although the industry recorded the lowest ever rate of catastrophic injuries in 2022, the number of overall greyhound racing injuries has seen an increase. In response to this increase, a Race Injury Reduction Summit was held so that industry could work implement strategies aimed at making racing safer for our canine athletes.
Who was consulted on the Action Plan?

A number of industry bodies and representatives were part of the development of the Action Plan, including:

  • Greyhound Racing NSW
  • Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission
  • Greyhound Breeders, Owners & Trainers Association
  • Greyhound Clubs NSW
  • Greyhound Racing Victoria
  • Greyhound Racing New Zealand
  • GWIC Industry Participant Advisory Council
  • Professor Allan Eager, University Technology Sydney
What is in the Action Plan?

The action plan includes:

  • Pilots of double arm lures and preferential box draws.
  • A pilot of GWIC Veterinarians attending trials.
  • Education for trainers in relation to injury prevention and treatment.
  • New procedure of clearance to return to racing following long layoff due to injury; and
  • Research into other race injury causations.

It includes a description of each action, details on the outcome, who is responsible and when each action is to be implemented by, as well as, further strategies to be explored.
