Industry updates / 14 June 2019: RSPCA v Sultana outcome

Last week Mr Charles Sultana was sentenced in the Blacktown Local Court for seven (7) offences under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 for failing to provide veterinary treatment to 12 greyhounds for a number of conditions.

Mr Sultana was charged by the RSPCA NSW with the animal welfare offences in 2018 after an investigation led to 12 greyhounds being seized by the RSPCA NSW from Mr Sultana’s Marsden Park property on 3 and 9 July 2018.

Mr Sultana entered a plea of guilty to all charges on 2 May 2019 and the Court last week fined him a total of $2,800 and implemented a five (5) year prohibition order, which prevents Mr Sultana from purchasing, acquiring or taking possession or custody of a greyhound for a period of five (5) years.

RSPCA NSW have reported that 11 of the 12 greyhounds seized have been successfully rehomed.

The Commission imposed an interim suspension upon Mr Sultana’s registration on 10 August 2018 pending the finalisation of the inquiry into the matter, pursuant to Rule 92(5)(c) of the Commission’s Greyhound Racing Rules.

The Commission will now determine appropriate disciplinary action to be taken against Mr Sultana.
